The Old Mill Sanitary Sewage Pumping Station (SPS) is located at 1810 Old Mill Road, adjacent to the Grand River at the intersection of Old Mill Road and Pinnacle Drive in the Lower Doon neighbourhood of the City of Kitchener. The Old Mill SPS services a 161.4 ha area generally bounded by Highway 401 to the east, Homer Watson Boulevard to the south, Homer Watson Park to the west and the Grand River to the north. The service area is predominantly residential with the exception of the Doon Campus of Conestoga College, located at the east edge of the service area. Sewage collected at the Old Mill SPS is pumped approximately 800 m via a single 350 mm diameter forcemain to the Kitchener Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which is owned and operated by the Region of Waterloo.

An environmental assessment was completed with the overall objective: “To improve and bring into compliance with current City of Kitchener and MOECC standards the Old Mill Sanitary Pumping Station (OMSPS) and tributary sewer system as necessary to accommodate future development and to determine the “Preferred Alternative” for implementing such improvements while maintaining the objectives of: protection of the environment; minimal disruption to residents and surrounding areas; engaging a broad range of stakeholders; and documenting the study process in compliance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Schedule “B” process.” 

The “Preferred Alternative” was determined to be Option 3 (West): constructing a new sanitary pumping station and emergency storage tank in the northwest corner of Willow Lake Park, and decommissioning the existing Old Mill Sanitary Pumping Station. 

This tender is for the construction of the new Old Mill Pumping Station.
