Description: 

The City of Kitchener intends to proceed with the construction of the Middle Strasburg Trunk Sanitary Sewer (MSTSS). MSTSS – Northwest portion from its existing terminus at north end of Huron Village Subdivision to Bleams Road Pumping Station, west of Fischer-Hallman Road, extending over an approximate project distance of 1,900 metres.

The work includes the clearing and grubbing of any vegetation within the limits of proposed construction zone, installation of the proposed erosion control measures, construction of sanitary sewers and maintenance holes in the locations shown on the Contract Drawings, fine grading and restoration complete with topsoil and seed.  The sanitary sewer installation work includes four (4) sections of sewers proposed to be installed by trenchless method.

Contractor Qualifications and Experience: 

The Contractor performing the trenchless sewer installation work specified herein shall have successfully completed at least three (3) shafts, a minimum of 16m depth, using the proposed shaft construction methods of similar size, depth, and complexity, and in similar soil and groundwater conditions, within the past five (5) years. The Contractor shall provide proof that the assigned shaft construction superintendent shall have had at least five (5) years of shaft and excavation construction experience and shall have worked on at least two (2) similar projects within the past five (5) years using similar types of equipment required for this WORK and in similar soil and groundwater conditions.

All microtunneling work shall be performed by an experienced contractor who has at least ten (10)years
of experience in performing microtunneling work and has completed at least two (2) similar projects
involving at least 275 m of microtunneling on each project. At least one of the projects shall have an
individual drive equal to or greater in length than the longest drive on this project. The contractor shall
submit a description of referenced projects including owner’s name and contact information, project
superintendent, and machine operators. The contractor shall have experience with pipe jacking for
pipes greater than 1,200 mm in diameter and demonstrated ability and experience on microtunneling
projects with similar bend radii to this project, including the minimum bend radius required for this
project.

The Contractor shall submit prior to the start of any instrumentation installation work verification that
the workforce is qualified to complete the work (licenses, certifications, etc.) and that the work will be
effectively supervised (manager, foreman, etc.), including providing a verification of a minimum
experience of requirements outlined in the Contract Documents.
